A Normal Sperm Count
It’s frustrating when a couple is trying to have a baby and they can’t because of problems. It seems that most infertility problems in male infertility are caused by a low sperm count. It’s is about half of all infertility problems that are encountered by couples trying for that baby is male infertility. And with male infertility the most common form is a low sperm count.
Sperm Count Classification
A normal sperm count, as given by the World Health Organization consists of the following characteristics:
| Definition of a "normal" sperm count: | ||

The concentration of sperm should be at 20 million per milliliter at least if not more.

Total volume of sperm needs to be at least 2 milliliters.

During ejaculation the total amount of sperm that should be present needs to be at least 40 million if not more.

Although some sperm will be dead, usually around 25 percent in a normal sperm count, the other 75 percent need to be alive.
![]() |
Of the sperm present and alive at least 30 percent of them need to be normal shape and form.
![]() |
Of the sperm that are alive 25 percent of them need to be swimming in a rapid forward movement, in a normal sperm count.

Of your sperm that are alive you need to have 50 percent of them swimming forward not necessarily in a rapid movement, but at least sluggishly.
These are the characteristics that the World Health Organization has come up with after numerous studies. These numbers are just averages too; you should really have better numbers than these. Plus remember even if you do have a lower sperm count than the above averages, you can still be a father of a child; it’s just that you may not have as high of a chance. Just the same as someone with a higher sperm count isn’t guaranteed to have a child either, these again are just averages not the key to having a child.
Increasing Your Sperm Count
There are numerous reasons why you might have a low sperm count, these reasons can be as follows. Stress, genetic conditions, a nutritional deficiency, the use of illegal or even prescription drugs, obesity, varicoceles, infections, and yes even smoking.
Things You Can Do at Home
Here are some great tips that may help you to increase your sperm count:
| Good ‘ol home remedies: | |||
| 1. | Exercise | With regular exercise you will reduce your stress level, but you need to be careful too. If you do too much exercise you may actually cause yourself harm in some cases, certain exercises will have a negative impact on the testicles, such as bicycling. | |
| 2. | Ejaculating less often | If you have more ejaculations your semen are going to be less dense, meaning less chance of pregnancy, try to space out your ejaculations to every three days, this will help immensely. | |
| 3. | Less vises | Refrain from smoking, legal or illegal products, and don’t drink much alcohol. | |
| 4. | Improve blood circulation | Get a body massage, or massage herbal oil into your skin, this will help to improve your blood circulation. | |
| 5. | Sex for breakfast?! | Sperm counts seem to be higher in the morning and afternoon, so if you are trying to get pregnant try and have sex in the early morning and afternoon. This could help increase the percentage or chance of becoming pregnant. | |
| 6. | Lose the whitie tighties | You need to try to avoid tight underwear, whirlpools, or saunas; these will all increase the temperature of the testicles, thus killing some sperm. | |
| 7. | More vitamins | Incorporate natural supplements or vitamins, they are supposed to help increase your bodies production of sperm. | |
| 8. | Eat better | Change your diet; eat high proteins, low fats, and rich in vegetables and whole grains. Be sure to avoid bitter or spicy foods as this taints the flavor of your mojo. | |
Also there are several different vitamin supplements that you can take that may help to make your low sperm count a thing of the pass. They are:
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin E
- Vitamin B12 Selenium
- Zinc Arginine
- Carnitine
You can also try a variety of dietary changes that may help a man who is suffering from a low sperm count, these may help to increase your sperm count and help to have that baby you are desperately attempting to have.
| The dietary changes are as follows: | ||

You need to drink at least 48 ounces of water per day, if not more.
If possible you need to try and eat organic foods as much as possible. Studies have shown a connection between chemicals and pesticides affecting natural male enhancement and even female infertility. It may be best to try and switch to all organic meals in this case.
You can tell that with these dietary changes they aren’t only helping you out with your sperm count problems, but they make sense in a health sense. Who doesn’t need to be healthier?
Things to Remember
One thing to remember not to get frustrated if you don’t get pregnant right away, it’s not going to fix your problem, or low sperm count overnight by doing these changes. Time and patience are your best friends, it’s when we aren’t trying to achieve something that the pressure is less and it usually happens. Haven’t you seen those people who’ve been trying for years to get pregnant, but just don’t seem to get there? But another couple who isn’t even trying becomes pregnant. It’s because they are putting less emphasis on the situation, thus they feel less stress from it.
As noted above stress is a big factor in low sperm count, so maybe if you and your wife have been trying a while to have that first baby you should just do the above things, but also try and put less pressure on yourself. Really it will be amazing, and you may be welcoming a baby into the world sooner than you think.
